A common pathology in our practices

Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is a common condition that we encounter almost daily in our practice. Unsightly and often time-consuming to treat, it requires rigor and regularity. Approximately 10% of adults are affected, with a higher prevalence in those over 70. The role of the chiropodist is therefore essential for diagnosis, monitoring and therapeutic guidance .

Better understanding of nail fungus

Nail fungus is therefore an infection of the nail by a fungus , most often a dermatophyte. It can also be caused by yeasts or molds. Typical signs: thickened, yellowed, brittle, ridged nail. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and confirmation by a mycological sample .

Risk factors and prevention

Frequent exposure to hot and humid environments (swimming pools, steam rooms, closed-toe shoes, etc.) promotes contamination. Good hygiene, alternating shoes, breathable socks , and managing excessive sweating are the keys to prevention.

Possible treatments

Two main strategies:

  • Local treatment (varnish, film-forming solutions): suitable for early forms. It requires in-office milling to remove the infected area and promote product penetration.

  • Oral treatment : prescribed in cases of extensive or persistent mycosis, under medical supervision.
